Washington Breaks Losing Streak, Wins Two
August 12, 2001
(AP) VERO BEACH, FL--The Washington Sea Dogs won both
halves of a doubleheader to break a seven-game losing
string and regain their control on their
division-title hopes.
Washington had lost four one-run games in the losing
string, including back-to-back one-run losses Monday,
but broke out with twenty-four runs in the two games,
both blowouts.
The first game was marked by an 18-run explosion.
Washington had 22 hits and four home runs in the game,
including two by Mickey Kelly, who had four hits and
four RBI.
Shawn Estes got the win for the Sea Dogs. Though he
allowed six runs, five earned, only 10 Coos Bay
Chameleons reached base in seven innings.
The second game was won on the arm of Hideo Nomo and
two relievers, who five-hit the Vero Beach Bums. Vero
Beach's only run came on an fielder's choice in the
first inning after a Mike Kinkade double.
Chuck Knoblauch led the Washington attack with his
thirteenth home run, and Kelly had three more hits in
the second game.
With the wins, the Sea Dogs keep pace with the Phoenix
Gila Monsters, who also won twice. Washington is four
games behind Phoenix for the Data Division lead and
leads the wild-card race by thirteen games over
Sacramento. Washington's magic number to win the wild
card is thirty-one.
The Sea Dogs will face former Sea Dog pitchers Willie
Adams and Chad Ogea on Monday when the series resumes.
Washington will counter with John Burkett and Doc
Gooden.
