(AP) WASHINGTON--The Washington Sea Dogs are proving that they still
have teeth.
Washington swept both games of a doubleheader today, dropping the
Sacramento River Otters and running their winning string to five
straight games. Washington has won thirteen of their last fourteen
games.
In the first game, Cy Young contender Shawn Estes pitched seven-plus
innings of shutout ball as Washington won 6-0. Estes lowered his ERA
to 1.62, second best in the Defiant, and won his eighth game, also
second.
Washington's offensive attack was led by Mickey Kelly, who hit his
twelfth homer of the season. Eric Young had three hits, his first
three-hit game of the season.
The second game was dominated by Washington's offense, as Scott Brosius
hit two homers and drove in four runs to spark a 10-3 victory.
Every Washington starter reached base, and though the Sea Dogs mustered
only eleven hits against three Sacramento pitchers, they also garnered
ten walks.
Washington starter Hideo Nomo had another strong performance on the
mound, pitching eight innings of three-run baseball. Nomo struck out
seven and won his fourth game.
After the wins, Washington's record rose to 38-20. Their .655 winning
percentage is fourth in the PVBL, and they lead the early wild-card
race by five games over falling Moncton.
Washington will face Sacramento once more before an off-day on June
seventh. The Sea Dogs will be at home until June 10, as they will host
Riker leader Punxatawney (32-26) for a three-game set before going on
the road.
