Galena trades prospects for Steinbach!
August 28, 2001
Galena, IL--Matthew Peck, GM/owner of the Galena Hamsters, has just pulled
off a deal with Mike Cade, owner of Motor City. Preliminary reports show
that vetern catcher Terry Steinbach, 36, is heading to Galena for a package
of prospects. The prospects are thought to be 3B Dave Kelly, CF Brian Foley,
and RHP Pete Douglas. Of the three, Douglas is the most ready for the
majors, possibly making his major league debut as early as 2002. Kelly and
Foley are at least a few years away from making a major league impact.
"Most people realized our catching situation needed improvement,"
admitted Peck, "this catching-by-committee has worked ok, but I think we
needed something better than 'ok' to reach the next level. We're very happy
to acquire Mr. Steinbach. He's having great year, hitting over .300 with 20+
hr. He brings a vetern stability to the clubhouse, and knows how to call a
ballgame. He should fit in well with Galena."
Steinbach, a free agent at the end of the season, may very well
re-sign with Galena in the offseason. Galena does not have a young catcher
ready to step in next season. Even though the Hamsters have acquired
Steinbach, reports are that they are not done trading. Galena is currently
in talks with Ann Arbor to help acquire more bench help. It is not known
what players are involved in those talks.
