(AP) Ann Arbor - The AllKnighters took two games from Deadwood to
reach .500 mark, but that is not all they took. Ann Arbor, inbetween the
two games, traded for the Outlaws young righthander Frank Callahan, how
took the loss in yesterdays game. Callahan has been a disappointement to
Deadwood carrying an ERA over six into today game, although that is only
through 8 starts.
"Callahan sported a 2.68 ERA in 2000 and a 3.14 in 1999, so there is no
doubt that he has talent," commented GM Michael Kennedy. "This team is
committed to it's younger players and we can't help but be improved by
this trade. We would have to get very lucky to produce a pitcher of this
caliber with the #15 pick, and at only 24 years of age, he is still
getting better. This allows us to go after an offensive player with the
#7 pick in the draft and then select the best available talent with the
#19 pick. We are real please with this deal."
Field Manager Buddy Bell was very happy with the move, "Frank should log
a lot of innings this year. He will start in the pen, but it is almost a
virtual certainty that he will see some time in the rotation, if not
becoming a permanent member. He may move into the #5 spot allowing young
John Snyder to work out some problems in the pen."
Rumors have also flown about the possible departure of AllKnighter
mainstays Scott Sanders and Quentin McCraken, but neither Kennedy or
Bell would comment.
