Groundhogs Still in Race at the Break July 14, 2000

It has been a pathetic year for the Riker division. Division leader Tampa Bay
is 45-44, just 1 game over .500. Fortunately for Punxatawney, this means they
are just 3 games behind even with a 42-47 record.
"Ever since Valentin went down, things have gone wrong," said co-captain Tony
Batista.
But while the Hogs are down, they aren't out. After underperforming in the
first half, the odds are looking good for Batista, Wilson, Jennings, and
others to rebound and improve. Lieber should also improve in the second half.
"We've been in pennant races before, Tampa hasn't. We're confident we'll end
up on top," said GM Dan Shapiro.
