Phoenix Rests Starters, Prepares for Playoffs September 13, 2000
Phoenix (AP) - In an effort to rest their starters before the
playoffs, the Phoenix Gila Monsters today recalled more players from
the minors, and set a new lineup. "It's been a long season, and our
guys have played hard. We thought they needed some time off before the
playoffs. Obviously, they'll all play regularly again before the
playoffs start, but they've earned some time off.", said GM/Manager
Patrick Bridges. The Gila Monsters, who currently have the best record
in the game, have clinched the overall first place in the Defiant
League. Rumor has it that the Phoenix management is busy with contract
negotiations with several veterans, as well, to prepare for the
off-season free agent signings.
In addition, the Monsters seem to be trying to avoid injuries. Though
hit early with injuries to key players like David Justice and Derek
Jeter, the Gila Monsters have so far avoided any season-ending
injuries, except to long-reliever Greg Swindell. The roster moves are
seen as a way of protecting the veterans from injury, giving
experience to minor-leaguers, and resting the exhausted Phoenix
lineup. In addition, to Swindell, Brian Hunter was placed on the
15-day DL today. "He's having some slight vision trouble that we want
to get cleared up before the playoffs. We're not sure if he'll be 100%
by then, but we're hoping so."
Phoenix announced their lineup for the next week, and for the playoffs
today. Next week's lineup, listed below, is an attempt to give
major-league time to minor league players. Obviously, veterans will be
used for pinch-hitting and spot pitching to keep them fresh, but well
rested.
