Two pitchers that were traded for each other ended up winning the Cy Young. The trade that sent Ben McDonald to Montreal helped buoy the Royals to a first place finish. McDonald was the glue that solidified the Royals pitching staff, but the most dominant pitchers during the September stretch were Armando Reynoso and Jack McDowell.

"I may have helped this team achieve its best season ever," said McDonald, "but believe me, I was the ant that made the rock roll. I'd like to dedicate this award to Jack [McDowell] because he provided the clubhouse inspiration for this team."

McDonald was the second Montreal Royal pitcher in 4 years of PVBL history to win the Cy Young award. Randy Johnson won the Cy Young award in 1998.

Just yesterday, centerfielder Otis Nixon decided to leave the game on a high note. He played 106 games for the Royals this season, batted .293 and stole 52 bases. He was also fourth on the team in runs scored and lead the team in triples with 8.

37-year old firstbaseman Juan Samuel also retired. He did not play all season for the Royals despite a comeback season in 1999.
