The Montreal Royals were on a mission last night: add talent to the farm
system. It was kind of tough considering they had a late first round draft
pick. Instead, the Royals first signed 24-year old Trot Nixon who is pretty
much ready to play in the majors. The Royals have a very weak rightfield
(Danny Tartabull and Bobby Bonilla share the position) and Nixon might get
some regular playing time.
Later, Carbonetto knocked his head against the wall for not taking
thirdbaseman Mike Lowell. Throughout Royals history the team has never had
an above-average thirdbaseman, and Lowell might have just been that player.
The trade to get Frank Thomas looks ingenious when you hear who the Royals
got with the 2nd round pick obtained from the Moncton Moose: 22-year old
Melvin Lowry. His control is still in development, but he has an arsenal of
deadly pitches and has exceptional arm strength.
Tom Daly, Montreal's 4th round pick, is a Quebec native from Longeuil. Some
scouts have dubbed him as the next Chris Spier.
