Edmonton Leading... Deadwood Pitching April 20, 2000
Most of you have been waiting a long time for this column to reappear
within the PVBL press. I'm happy to announce that it's back for the 2000
season! Hopefully, this time I'll be able to write this column with a
bit more consistency.
The smartest move GM Brian Sculac made during the offseason was no move
at all! It was only a matter of time before the Edmonton Sled Dogs
would, shall we say... lead the pack. The young guns have finally come
out of their shells; Tony Clark, Alex Rodriguez and Jose Cruz, Jr. have
5 home runs apiece. Unlike last year--A-Rod was pretty much a one-man
show--this has been a team effort. Even the unwanted leftfielder Greg
Vaughn has shown some flair for the offensive--he has driven in 17 runs
this year.... The New Orleans fans may have to settle for another
subpar season. There is a lot of talent on that team, but it needs time
to mature. Certainly, newcomers Sterling Hitchcock and Denny Neagle will
give the team some legitimacy.... You've gotta wonder: How did the
Deadwood Outlaws win the World Series with their pitching "depth"? Greg
maddux and Jeff Fassero are still reliable, and David Wells has also
been strong, but after that the pitching is a wasteland.... Tim Belcher
is one of the most underappreciated pitchers in the league. He has a
3.99 career ERA, and is off to his best start ever with a 3-0 record and
a 1.54 ERA. The Sled Dogs have a knack for turning around pitchers'
careers (e.g. Pete Schourek).... Hartford pitcher Roger Clemens is back
to his old self. He currently has a 1.77 ERA, with 23 strikeouts in 20
innings pitched.... The Montreal Royals have broke even at .500, thanks
to one guy: old faithful Rusty Greer. He has already scored 14 runs, is
batting .400 and has 6 home runs.... After Pete Harnisch has struggle is
his last 2 starts for the Royals, 38-year old knuckleballer Richard
Galen will get the nod.
