Mustangs Trade Helling and Encarncion May 20, 2000
Medina (AP)- Pending league approval, the Medina Mustangs traded pitcher Rick
Helling and outfielder Juan Encarncion to Atlanta for Pitchers Mike Mussina,
Rod Beck, and journeyman infielder Jeff Kent.
"It was tough giving up Juan, " said owner Randy Reese, "since he was our
first pick in last years draft. He is going to be a hell of player, and will
anchor the corner in Atlanta for years to come. However, Atlanta said they
need to get some quality younger players, and we are always looking to
strengthen our rotation."
The acquisition of Mussina, Beck, and Kent seems to stray from the general
youth movement of the Mustangs, but Reese wasnt concerned. "All three of them
will still be in their prime when we make our playoff run in a couple of
years. Besides, perhaps they can help us win a few more games this year, as we
dont really want to finish in the basement again."
