Fishermen Try To Quiet Bar Controversy June 22, 2000
NANAIMO, BC -This sleepy town, on the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island
was always better known for it's laid back fisherman community and it's
delectable desserts than for controversy, which some PVBL hooligans seem
to be trying to stir up. When the Kamloops Blazers awarded the city with
its PVML franchise, the Nanaimo Bars, there wasn't much response from
the citizens.
"Sure I like the baseball," lifetime resident Joe McDonald said while
tying up his boat after a day at sea, "But most Nanaimoans don't have
time to go down to the ball park, eh? We're just too concerned with our
fishin'." However, the Bars did draw a reasonable crowd on opening day
thanks to "Free Bar Day," where every fan recieved a Nanaimo Bar upon
admittance. The bar in question, is a thin chocolatey cake, topped with
a sweet custard, and a layer of hardened chocolate on top, sprinkled
with coconut and served ice cold.
Kamloops owner Paul Glass has recieved some criticism among the province
for not giving the team to provincial capital Victoria, or to the major
metropolis Vancouver. He admitted that the main reason he chose the city
of Nanaimo for his franchise was because of "the bar".
"Sure, the reason I chose Nanaimo for the team was because I wanted my
players to experience the pinnacle of desserts whenever they wanted. But
this is NOT because the bar holds some magical power, but because I
don't want my prospects to go to bed hungry at night."
The quiet town has officially welcomed any investigation by PVBL
authorities. In fact, they are so excited about any possible visitors,
that they've announced "BarFest 2000", a weeklong celebration of the
Bar.
"Oh, I'm just so excited," said one Ida Flaherty, "we haven't had a
party like this since Marv's wedding back in 1962."
