Neagle & Gilkey Rumored Gone

May 29, 2000

Some players released to Free Agency to make roster room

New Orleans, LA (AP)- The New Orleans Vampires have called an afternoon press conference to make, what they describe as, "a major trade announcement." Former Vampires GM and current ESPN baseball analyst Peter Gammons has learned that veteran pitcher Denny Neagle, still one of the top-rated pitchers in the game, and veteran CF Bernard Gilkey appear to be headed for either the Binghamton Mets or the Phoenix GilaMonsters.

"That's what my sources tell me," explained Gammons on this morning's SportsCenter cable show. "I'm guessing they're headed for the Mets but I know that Phoenix owner Patrick Bridges was quite serious about acquiring Bernard Gilkey. Who knows what last minute offers have been and will be flying around. Maybe one is going to each team. All I know is that the Vampires are probably picking up some more young pitching and draft picks in the process. We'll see what they say this afternoon, Stuart (Scott)."

So, a day after Jaime Navarro was dealt for their pitcher-of-the-future, Jackson Pride, and with rumors still swirling about Neagle and Gilkey's time apparently being up in Louisianna, the Vampires continue to look to move the following players:

RHP Ken Hill 75-92-69, Age 31
RHP Clint Faatz 72-65-57, Age24
RHP George Connolly 72-16-86, Age 25
RHP Jeff McCurry 74-63-80, Age 27

Meanwhile, to make room for what are sure to be many new additions over the next few months, the Vampires have Released the following players to Free Agency:

*CF Gilberto Trice,

RHP Ricky Bones,
RHP Mark Brandenburg,
