Montreal's Galen a Bust, Vampires on the Rise? May 2, 2000
Vampire bats explode...again
New Orleans, LA (AP)- The New Orleans Vampires continued their winning ways today, extending their streak to 4 and have gone 6 and 4 over their last 10 (only 1 game worse than first-place Edmonton). Today, center fielder Doug Glanville led the way as New Orleans returned triumphantly home after a rare 3-game sweep of Deadwood on the road. Glanville and the Vampires gave an unfriendly welcome to the Royals at Huey Long Field today amidst the blustery wind and rain that cost the teams a combined 82 minutes of Rain Delay in the 5th and 6th innings. Much like the local weather, this game wasn't pretty at all. Something New Orleans has begun to make a habit out of, the offenses were explosive while the pitching staffs were atrocious. Doug Glanville went 4 for 5 on the day with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI resulting from his 3rd homer of the year off of aged Montreal "rookie" Rich (?) Galen. Galen (2-1), who burst onto the scene with somewhere around 35 K's in his first 2 starts, fell and fell *hard* today at the hands of the Vampires. Looking like a complete hoax, Galen showed his age. He lasted only 4 innings and gave up 10 earned runs on 14 hits with no, I repeat, *NO* strikeouts. New Orleans prevailed 11 to 7 behind the strong long relief work of John Burke (1-1, 1.08 ERA) who came on to rescue the still-struggling Ken Hill. Orlando Cabrera and Adam Riggs also homered and Jason Kendall broke out of his uncharacteristically long hitting slump, going 3 for 5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. The win moved New Orleans' win streak to 4 and within 9 1/2 games of first-place Edmonton. Sterling Hitchcock and Kevin Millwood will take the mound in tomorrow's double-dip with Montreal to conclude the series.
TRADEWINDS
The Vampires seem anxious to acquire some solid relief pitching in return for some of its hot young prospects or picks.
