Vampires & Outlaws Combine for 18 HR on the Day May 1, 2000
Vampire outslug Outlaws twice and embarass Charles Johnson yet again Deadwood, SD (AP)- The New Orleans Vampires and Deadwood Outlaws continued their wild, heated rivalry today with the final two games of a 3-game set. New Orleans had taken Game 1 yesterday, 9-7, and were looking to continued the slugfest today. And a pitching duel it was not.
Deadwood (9-17) and New Orleans (10-16) combined to hit 12 homeruns in Game 1 and another 6 homeruns in Game 2. Both turned out to be victories for the Vampires, who completed their first sweep of Deadwood in 2 yrs and extended their season-high win streak to 3. New Orleans overcame 7 homeruns by Deadwood and a horrible performance on the mound by Denny Neagle and his supporters >from the pen to edge the Outlaws, 11-8. Brian Boehringer (1-0) picked up the win in relief, Bret Saberhagen recorded his second save on the year and Leiter (0-1) took the loss for the defending world champs. The Vampires belted 5 homers of their own while continuing to embarass Deadwood catcher Charles Johnson with 5 steals. 4 of the steals belonged to center fielder Doug Glanville who went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks. Of the win, in between games, Manager Pete Rose declared, "We have to potential to be one of the most potent offenses in the EL when we're clicking. Let's just hope our pitching holds up." Well, it did. Game 2 was much more routine for the Vampires as they dispatched easily with the Outlaws behind a 5 for 5 performance by left fielder Bernard Gilkey and a stellar debut for former New Diggens Budweiser Frog Jaime Navarro (1-2). Gilkey was 5 for 5 with 3 homeruns, 5 runs scored and 6 RBI in New Orleans' 10-4 victory. Meanwhile, Bill Mueller and Doug Glanville stole 2 more bases off of Johnson, making it 7 steals on the day (5 of them being Glanville's alone). Navarro picked up his first win as a Vampire and his first win of the season, going 7 strong innings and allowing only 1 earned run on 6 hits. Recently acquired Outlaw Chan Ho Park struggled mightily, however. Park allowed 7 earned runs on 8 hits in only 5 innings of work. First baseman Mo Vaughn put it best when he said, "Gilkey made Park his bitch today, man. And Doug (Glanville) took (Charles) Johnson to school all day. Defending champs my ass. These guys didn't know what hit 'em." Indeed. Yet it's doubtful Vaughn won himself any future jobs as a color commentor today either.
TRADEWINDS
The Vampires are still in search of relief pitching and/or ammy draft picks.
