Wood is Too Good for Abominations October 16, 2000
Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations gave up home-field advantage in the
Championship series after losing to the Sacramento River Otters 5-2 in
Game 1 of the best of seven series. Kerry Wood dominated the Anchorage hitters
through 7 2/3 innings, giving up just one earned run and five hits. Otters'
centerfielder Deion Sanders hit the game winning home run, a three run blast
off of Anchorage starter Buddy Moisan, who was credited with the loss.
Anchorage's bats seemed frozen in the chilly Alaska air, though Wood only
struck out two batters. "He's not real tricky. He throws hard and its tough
to get a hold of his pitches. He's a great, young pitcher." said Anchorage
DH Jose Canseco, who was 1 for 4 in the opener.
The Abominations decided to go with their number five starter in Game 1, an
unorthodox move, because it will not allow their ace, Bobby Jones, to pitch
three times in the series. "We'd rather have fresh guys out there then to
rely on one guy to win three times. Its too much pressure for (Bobby)." said
Anchorage pitching coach Chuck Crim.
Despite the deficit, the 'Boms players are still very confident. "If you
look at what we did last series, we came out slow. But this team we're
playing against pretty much sucks, so we shouldn't have a problem." said
outfielder Brian Jordan. "I can't see the series lasting more then four games."
When Jordan was corrected with the fact that the Abominations couldn't win in
under five games, he said "Well, five then."
