Bullpen Fails in Loss to Maple Dogs October 11, 2000
Anchorage AK (AP) - In an impressive late-inning rally, the Mississauga Maple
Dogs made mince-meat out of the Anchorage bullpen to take a 1-0 advantage
in the best of seven series. Anchorage shelled Mississauga ace Kevin Brown,
who was yanked after just one inning, but failed to hold on to victory
after their closer Eddie Guardado gave up a two run home run to Marty Cordova
in the top of the ninth.
Anchorage led the entire game but was unable to close out the game, despite
having the EL's saves leader on the mound. "I just didn't have it. I gave them
this game. Like hell they are going to get anymore." said a visibly upset
Guardado in the locker room after the game. "Our bats were there. Nine out of
ten of these we'll win. The crowd was intense, they really helped us. We're
gonna blow them out of the stadium tomorrow." said pitching coach Chuck Crim.
Anchorage starter Buddy Moisan made his first appearance of the playoffs a
successful one, pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up just two runs. "I
struggled a bit with control, but I felt good. Hopefully I'll get another
chance to help us win this series." said Moisan. Anchorage pitchers gave up
11 walks total in the game. "We had a problem getting pitches over the plate
which will not happen again. We're gonna get some guys on the mound who
throw strikes." said manager Nick Tulach in a profanity-laced post-game
interview. "If they aren't going to throw strikes at least aim for the
(expletive)'s head."
Anchorage will most likely send ace Bobby Jones to the mound tomorrow.
