Abominations May Grace Playoff, Grace Will Not October 1, 2000
Anchorage AK (AP) - With one final game to go in this 2000 season, the Anchorage
Abominations find themselves controlling their own destiny toward the
playoffs. If they win, they're in. Sort of. Only if Tijuana wins are the
Abominations not assured a playoff spot. In that scenerio, the gods of
baseball will decide the divine opponent of the Galena Hamsters. Even if
Anchorage loses, the only way they are eliminated from consideration for the
playoffs is if Tijuana wins.
Either way, one thing is for sure. Mark Grace's season is over. Grace
suffered severe back spasms during the third inning and had to be removed
from the lineup. "I tried to play with it, but I couldn't. I couldn't
move around in the field or swing a bat. I'm sorry that I can't help this
team make the playoffs tomorrow." said Grace, who has not committed an error
in two seasons as an Abomination. Grace has been an integral part of the
Abominations since coming to the team from New Diggens. He has played in
149 games this year and is batting .231 with a .308 OBA. Grace was placed
on the DL today. "This is why we went out and picked up Brian (Jordan). We
knew we'd need some insurance and hopefully he'll help propel us into the
playoffs." said Nick Tulach, manager and owner of the Abominations.
Jordan has played a limited role since coming to the Abominations from
the struggling Vero Beach Bums. He will provide Anchorage with a bit better
bat and better fielding in right field then Jose Canseco. Canseco is also
happy to be able to concentrate on hitting. "I feel bad for Mark, but it
works out well for me. I can help this team more in the dugout then on the
field." said Canseco. Jordan will bat eigth in the lineup behind Marquis
Grissom, another former Bum.
