Abominations Hibernate A Little Early September 13, 2000
Anchorage AK (AP) - Back-to-back sweeps by division rival Galena and cellar
dweller Albany have taken there toll on Anchorage's playoff hopes. A season
high eight game losing streak has put Anchorage in a tie for the wild card
spot with Tijuana, who has a much favorable schedule for the remainder of
the regular season.
Owner/manager Nick Tulach was noticably upset after the last loss to the
Cougars. "We've really put overselves in a bad position. We are fortunate
to be tied with Tijuana, but we need to play better baseball. Particularly
pitching." said Tulach. "We need a solid effort every game for the rest of
the season in order to expect to play in the post season."
As mentioned by Tulach, pitching has been the major problem during the skid.
Anchorage has seen their team ERA jump from 3.23 to 3.50 in the last two weeks.
Both the starters and the bullpen are accountable. "A few of the games, we
(the bullpen) were at fault, and some of them were the starters. Our offense
has been producing, which has been the frustrating part of it all." said
closer Eddie Guardado.
The Boms are not going to panic yet, though. "We need to get our consistancy
back. That's all. We just need to win and it'll snowball in the right
direction for us. We're gonna make it happen against the Maple Dogs, I
guarantee it." said outfielder Lance Johnson.
Anchorage will face Mississauga and then travel to Galena to take on the
division-leading Hamsters.
