Anchorage Owner Takes Stance Versus Medina June 20, 2000
Anchorage AK (AP) - After the late morning, profanity-laced tyraid by the
Medina Mustangs' owner Randy Reese, Anchorage owner Nick Tulach held his own
press conference to address the issue of "tanking games" and ho wit relates to
the PVBL. "Medina obviously has no need to tank games, but how that franchise
can survive after back-to-back record setting losing seasons is beyond me. I
have enough trouble keeping my team afloat and, though we have been in the
lottery for two season, we are no where near as pathetic as Medina." said
Tulach. The Anchorage owner also went on to comment on the competetiveness
of the league as a whole. "Competetive balance is always a concern in this
league. In fact, with the new rules in place for free agency, competetiveness
is the only remaining issue that needs to be addressed. Though I am not
accussing anyone of tanking games, I do feel it is a bit unfair to the
rest of the league when teams are not concerned whatsoever about the current
season and are only worried about two or three season from now when they
might be good." said Tulach. "You gotta feel sorry for those players who are
forced into playing there few years on such an unethical franchise."
Anchorage is by no means a powerhouse club itself and is currently
struggling
to remain in the playoff race. They are 2 1/2 games back of the New Diggens
Budweiser Frogs, who incidentally just came off a series with the Mustangs,
in the wild card race. "Our team was excited at an opportunity for post
season play this year, but with New Diggens and Tijuana playing in a division
with a non-competetive team, our chances of catching them are slim to none."
said Tulach.
Players on the Abominations are just happy they don't have to play for the
Mustangs. "Its the black hole of the league. You know if you get traded to
Medina, your career is probably over." said Anchorage catcher Chuck Lynn.
"I really feel sorry for the guys who have to waste their career's there.
Heck, I wouldn't try either." Others on the club were even more critical of
the Medina franchise. "That team is complete (expletive). They're a disgrace
to the league." said outfielder Lance Johnson. "I'll be glad to see them
move."
Anchorage has split their season series with Medina, 4-4.
