PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
Anchorage Cans Galena, Oil Can Put On Shelf

April 26, 2000

Anchorage AK (AP) - Close isn't even the word for game one of the first meeting of the Abominations and the Galena Hamsters. Anchorage came into the series just a game back of the division-leading Hamsters determined to continue their early season success. Their patience was what was truely tested. John Jaha hit a grand slam off of Lee Morgan in the bottom of the eigth inning to spark Anchorage past the much-despised Hamsters, 6-5.

Anchorage was losing the entire game, after Willie VanLandingham struggled and was pulled early after giving up four runs in the second inning. "Willie's arm has just not been feeling right. His velocity is down and he isn't getting much movement on his breaking stuff." said Anchorage pitching coach Chuck Crim. Oil Can Boyd, who was obtained as a free agent in the off season, came in and dominated for two innings, striking out four batters. But Oil Can was pulled after he felt a "pop" in his elbow. "There is no ligament damage, but he is going to have to go through a pretty intensive rehab." said Crim. "Its the chance you take when you put a fossil out there."

Anchorage sends Scott Aldred to the mound to face Jeremi Gonzalez in game two. "That one will be critical. We'll be resting Lance (Johnson), Jeff (Cirillo), Mike (Lieberthal), and Mark (Grace). We have to find offense from somewhere." said manager Nick Tulach.

The Abominations are tied for first in the Spock with Galena. Ann Arbor lost yesterday and remains a half game back.
