PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
Anchorage Caged By Hamsters

April 24, 2000

Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations, desperate for a series victory over the mighty Galena Hamsters, dropped the last two games of the series to Galena, 12-6 and 4-1.

Game two of the three game series was a homerun derby by Galena. Running Scott Aldred out early, rookie Steve Woodard made an appearance and gave up nine runs on ten hits in 6 2/3 innings. "The pitching was definately not there for us today. Steve struggled. He'll get his chance, though." said manager Nick Tulach in a post-game press conference.

Galena starter Jeremi Gonzalez was also run out early, but reliever Todd Stottlemyre, who Anchorage ironically pursued in the off-season, came on and earned the victory, despite struggling himself. "It was a tough game. There guys were seeing the pitches really well. Six runs is usually enough, but today it wasn't."

The controversial move of resting Jeff Cirillo and Lance Johnson had little effect on the Abominations' offense. gary DiSarcina, who filled in for Cirillo, was 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Tony Gwynn, who replaced Johnson in the lineup, was 0 for 4.

Game three of the series was the complete opposite. The pitching was adequete while the hitting was non-existent. "I was hoping for a solid game from Buddy (Moisan). He put up a hell of an effort. Our bats struggled, though." said Tulach.

the Abominations could not overcome their lone power threat being on the bench. "Its tough to sit a guy like John (Jaha) when you know you need him. But we need him to win the war. Today was just one battle." said Tulach. Mike Lieberthal, who hit cleanup in place of Jaha, was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. "He's gonna have to start putting up some numbers, because he's not in there for his defense." said Tulach.

The Abominations stay at home for a four game series against Medina before travelling to Atlanta to take on the new-look Centennials.
