PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
Abominations Make Minor Adjustments Via Draft

Febuary 12, 2000

Galena IL (AP) - The Anchorage Abominations' brain trust was present for this year's free agent draft, for the first time in the history of the PVBL. The Abominations came in expecting to get one, maybe two, role player-types and surprisingly came away with three: RHP Steve Woodard, OF Shane Spencer, and RHP Oil Can Boyd.

Anchorage was committed to helping out its bullpen, which sturggled in last year's campaign. "The addition of Steve [Woodard] and Oil Can Boyd should give us a little depth, if nothing else." said owner and manager Nick Tulach. "Shane [Spencer] was a best-available pick. He was pretty high on our board, so we decided to take him." Boyd and Woodard are likely to battle for a spot in the bullpen with incumbents Terry Werden and Marc Wilkins. Spencer will more then likely start the year in AAA New Iberia.

Anchorage Sets Roster After Successful Spring

Jacksonville (AP) - After finishing out the spring with a heartbreaking loss at Vero Beach, the Abominations got ready to head home to Anchorage for the start of the 2000 regular season. Compiling a 16-14 record in the spring, the Abominations feel that they have made real progress. "Record isn't important in spring. We were able to give a good look to our young guys and I think they look much improved."

Anchorage will have just one new face in the starting lineup and one in the starting rotation, but three new faces in the bullpen. Anchorage's roster will be set up as follows:

catcher: Mike Lieberthal, Chuck Lynn
firstbase: Mark Grace, John Jaha
secondbase: Miguel Cairo, Gary Disarcina
thirdbase: Jeff Cirillo, James Brosius
shortstop: Mark Grudzielanek, Gary DiSarcina
rightfield: Cliff Floyd, Tony Gwynn
centerfield: Brian McRae, James Brosius
leftfield: Lance Johnson, James Brosius
designated hitter: John Jaha

starting rotation
Mike Bottenfield
Bobby Jones
Willie VanLandingham
Scott Aldred
Buddy Moisan

bullpen

Oil Can Boyd
Steve Woodard
Billy Wagner
John Tankersley
Scott Service
Mike Holtz
Eddie Guardado

Anchorage has addressed the areas that it felt lacking in by acquiring a number of outfield prospects as well as a lot of help for the bullpen, both now and in the farm system.

Notes:

- Anchorage owner/manager Nick Tulach has admitted that he is in no hurry to fill the vacant manager position. "I guess as long as I can handle both jobs, I will do so." said Tulach. General manager "the Man" has assumed more responsibility for the team's personel decisions as well as maintaining authority over the price of concessions and amount of toilet paper available in the restroom facilities.

- Laboratories in Anchorage and Juneau have been working overtime during the off season to break down the infamous Maple Dogs cookies to figure out and duplicate the "magical" effect that they have on baseball players. The cookies have a very distinct flavor and have been said to be "very enjoyable for children of all ages."

- Outfield prospect Geoff Jenkins, who is highly touted, is expected to remain in single A Maui for the 2000 season. Jenkins, who was invited to spring training, showed little progress with his bat. He hit just .238 with 2 home runs during spring. "Oh, shucks, I guess I gotta spend another year in Hawaii." said Jenkins. "I'll really miss the balmy weather in Anchorage." Tony Gwynn will remain on the bench for the 'Boms, after hitting .311 in spring with 6 doubles.
