PVBL: Washington Sea Dogs
Washington Inks Walker

June 13, 1999

(AP) WASHINGTON--The Washington Sea Dogs today inked outfielder Larry Walker to a five-year contract extension. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is thought that Walker's deal is worth at least 50 million dollars.

"I'm proud to say that I'm going to remain a Sea Dog for most of the rest of my career," Walker, who built a no-trade clause into his contract, said. "It's great to be part of the best franchise in the PVBL, maybe in history."

As if he hadn't done enough already, Larry Walker moved into the #1 spot in Defiant League doubles. Walker now has 22 doubles to go with his 20 homers and 18 stolen bases, 58 RBI, .343 AVG, .403 OBA and .703 SLG, all in at least the top ten, most in the top five.

"When you're hot, you're hot," Walker said. "And I guess I'm hot right now."

It is thought in league circles that Washington has chosen to sign Walker to this deal because they want to commit to holding as many veterans as possible for the future.

Weiner said during the press conference announcing Walker's signing that one of the prominent Sea Dogs had expressed interest in pursuing a contract elsewhere, though Weiner declined to mention which.

"We want to make sure that the Sea Dog veterans know that we're there for them," Weiner said.
