(AP) WASHINGTON--Aghast at the amount of players given up for Jeff
Bagwell, the Washington Sea Dogs have protested the deal between Phoenix
and Binghamton today.
"We're protesting based on the enormity of the haul by the Phoenix Gila
Monsters," Washington General Manager Aaron Weiner. "Mark Whiten AND
Chili Davis plus a top prospect like Cloud? I wish I got deals like
that."
The numbers involved in this deal are especially curious.
Whiten: 50-89-47
Chili Davis: 64-78-25
Oort Cloud: 40-20-76, but 18 years old. A top prospect.
for
Jeff Bagwell: 67-99-55
"The truth of the matter is simply this: Bagwell is a super hitter, but
the three players involved in this deal simply surpass his level of
productivity," Weiner said. "A prospect of the level of Oort Cloud in
this league is an invaluable item, and to go with the other two
guys...it's just too much."
Weiner said that it wasn't so much the level of the current players dealt,
but the value of Cloud as the kicker.
"We're in full agreement that Chili DAvis and Mark Whiten are both
established, power-laden hitters and that trading the two of them up for
Mr. Bagwell is a reasonable, if potentially lopsided move for both parties
invovled," Weiner said. "But we just can't see dealing Cloud, who is a
major prospect, with them."
Washington wished to add that in no way do they bear ill will towards
Patrick Bridges nor Jason Garnar.
"We're not really mad at the people, just the deal," Weiner said. "We
hope the league agrees with us."
