Vero Beach, FL (AP) - The Vero Beach Bums have acquired RF Jeromy
Burnitz from the New Diggens Budweiser Frogs, Bums sources indicated
today. The two teams, who have agreed in principle to a deal (pending
league approval), had no official comment at press time.
Reports indicate that Burnitz, who has a lifetime BA of .275, was traded
along with a 2000 2nd round free agent draft pick to the Bums for relief
pitchers Kent Bottenfield and Terrell Wade, along with newly drafted
catcher Sandy Martinez.
Burnitz will most likely be used in situations against right-handed
pitching, perhaps in a DH role (instead of Dave Hollins against
right-handers) or spelling Brian Jordan in right field.
Bottenfield, who has made 86 appearances in just over 2 seasons with the
Bums, has an 8-9 record, 19 holds, 7 saves, and a 4.38 ERA. Bottenfield
was left off the playoff roster last season, which surprised some
observers. He was rumored to have lost favor with the team due to his
inconsistent performance. After the Bums traded his younger brother,
Mike, to the Anchorage Abominations last season, Bottenfield reportedly
demanded a trade as well. Wade, a prospect with an excellent fastball,
was little-used and a holdover from previous management. Martinez is a
catcher with excellent defensive skills.
The Bums are 11-10 so far this year and have had some trouble getting
their offense started. The Bums are batting .327 against left-handed
pitching, but just .246 against right-handers. The addition of Burnitz
should help in that regard.
