Calgary's Cowboys Eat More Than Beef! April 23, 1999
As Mark McGwire's use of Androstenedione (andro-steen-die-own) becomes
a major topic in the world of Major League Baseball, the PVBL's resident
slugger du-jour is reported to be taking it as well. Thunder Bay Storm
players who have been teammates of Thomas have told journalist Doug
Camilli that Thomas has been using the testosterone producing drug.
Mike Metcalfe, the speedy shortstop prospect who was recently acquired
by the Storm, was asked by Thomas to help him with his footspeed last
year when both were members of the Duluth Bjork. "Yeah, Frankie's a
little slow and he asked me to help him out. The first thing I asked
about was his training regimen. He told me he was using creatine
regularly for the energy boost and that he just started using this weird
drug that's supposed to be all natural, but if I can't pronounce the
damn thing than I stay away from it." Metcalfe told reporters. Metcalfe
went on to say that Thomas started popping pills consistnently before
the end of the season, even between innings sometimes. "The other
players ate sunflower seeds, Frankie took his androsteroids or
whatever."
Marty Cordova, who was in Spring Training with Thomas this season with
the Cowboys, tells a much worse tale: "It's no surprise to me that
Thomas is cracking them the way he is, and to some extent that whole
team. He was bigger than any player I've seen in a long time. I mean,
this guy's forearms were the size of my thighs! He was praising the
stuff for this and that and was practically giving it away to players,
telling them how much it'd beef 'em up. The thing is that all those guys
there are young and easily influenced by someone like Frank, that's why
I'm not surprised. I'm not into that kind of stuff though, I like my
workouts and vitamins, that's it."
As this story breaks the Cowboys haven't been able to be reached for
comment as, almost suspiciously, GM and Owner Marc-Andre Gagnon gives
them the weekend off. Statements are sure to come from Calgary players
and management as soon as they are able to be reached for comment.
