Player-of-the-Month
August 1999

Milwaukee (AP) - The August Player of the Month awards were announced today, amidst almost a whole month of speculation (read: no time). In a surprise, Montreal Royals dominated the month's worth of performance, while Binghampton's pitching staff lead the way for the (inferior) DL.

Selected for position players were Montreal Royal's outfielder Rusty Greer, who hit .392 with 11 homeruns, 27 RBIs and 6 stolen bases, while performing errorlessly in the field. For the DL, it was Phoenix Gila Monsters' outfielder Raul Mondesi that stole the show. Mondesi hit a whopping .442 with 2 triples, 9 HRs and 26 RBIs for the month.

Pitching selections were lead by a couple of relievers for the first time this season. Royals' pitcher Arthur Rhodes lead the way for the EL by recording a 0.71 ERA in 26 innings, giving up just 15 hits and striking out 14. In his 11 appearances, he managed to record a 2-0 record with 3 holds and a save. He did not allow any of the 6 inherited runners to score.

From the DL, it was a toss up between two Binghampton Mets' pitchers. Troy Percival got the nod for the award by compiling an amazing 5 saves in 9 appearances and 13 strikeouts in just 12 and a third innings of work.

Of note performances for the month were Andy Ashby, who went 3-0 with an 0.52 ERA for Binghampton, Bob Higginson who hit 12 homeruns and drove in 31 runs for Tucson. Quinton McCracken hit .410 with 16 doubles and 2 triples for Ann Arbor.
