Milwaukee (AP) - League officals announced the Pepper Virtual Baseball League
players of the month for May today. Among those awarded were Washington
Seadogs centerfielder Larry Walker, Dead Outlaws infielder Travis Fryman,
former Duluth Bjork pitcher Curt Schilling, and Ann Arbor ace Pedro Martinez.
Larry Walker tore up the DL with a league leading 13 homeruns in the month.
He also had eight doubles and a triple and drove in a league leading 34 runs.
Walker hit an amazing .386 in May and stole eight bases to top it all off.
Walker was set to Washington back on April 26th from Ann Arbor.
Deadwood infielder Travis Fryman lead the way offensively in the EL during
May. Fryman hit .330 in May and had nine homeruns. He also tripled once
during May. Fryman has also been playing out of position for a majority of
the month, at shortstop. "Its been a move that has definately helped us as
a team. I'll do whatever it takes." said Fryman.
Curt Schilling, who has since been traded across leagues to the EL, lit up
the DL during May and recorded a 3-0 record in five starts. He recorded an
unbelievable ERA of 0.70 for the month and only walked two batters while
striking out 25. "I'm still surprised that I was traded, but I am happy to
be in a winning atmosphere like Thunder Bay and am really enjoying the season."
said Schilling.
Ann Arbor surged toward the lead and overcame defending champ Galena in May
and a big part of it was the pitching of ace Pedro Martinez. Martinez,
though not flawless in the month, was nearly unstoppable with a 3-1 record in
five starts and a 1.97 ERA. Martinez struck out a league-leading 33 batters in
the month while walking just four. Martinez also recorded a complete game in
May.
Some other notable performances this month were: Kirk Rueter going 6-0 with
a 1.68 ERA, Chris Gott with a 4-0 record and a 0.96 ERA, Ken Caminiti batting
.416 in the month with 11 homeruns and 27 RBIs, Cecil Fielder and Shawn Green
both tied Larry Walker with 13 homeruns in the month of May.
