PVBL: Montreal Royals
Record & Hearts Broken

September 19, 1999

Something just happened in the PVBL that's a lot more exciting than the theater release of Insurrection. Frank Thomas will grace the cover of the next issue of Sports Illustrated, with the big number 59.

That's right. Frank Thomas has hit home run no. 59 in Hartford yesterday, breaking Mark McGwire's PVBL record of 58. It took Thomas almost a week to complete the feat after he hit no. 58 in Edmonton. Despite all the excited fans in Deadwood cheering on Frank Thomas, he failed to hit the long ball. The starter Tom Gordon gave up Thomas's record-breaking home run.

Thomas is still in contention for the Triple Crown (he has 4 less RBIs than Bobby Higginson) and a candidate to become the first ever PVBLer to hit .400 in a season. Obviously, this is Frank Thomas's year.

But now that spiritual leaders Rusty Greer and Mike Grace are out for the season, the Royals have not put any heart into their games over the past 2 weeks. Ever since Mike Grace went out with an injury, they have not been the dominant team they were in June and July.

All I can say is, Frank Thomas will probably never have another year like this... it almost seems wasted.
