PVBL: Montreal Royals
Mesa Still Saveless..Maddux Gets 1st Win

May 12, 1999

* The Royals lead their division in slugging percentage and are second in ERA behind the Deadwood Outlaws. The Royals are in last place but they could climb to the top if they keep up their performance.

* Jose Mesa, 6th on the career saves list, is now more solid than he's ever been: 1-1, 1.80 ERA in 10 innings pitched. The only problem is, he hasn't got a save! In fact, the Royals only have one save in total! The only other team with a total of 1 save is the Medina Mustangs, who have a 9-25 record.

* Jason Schmidt has been sent to the bullpen. He has an 0-7 record with a astronomical 6.87 ERA.

* Greg Maddux got his first win of the season, despite a sub-par performance. He gave up 6 earned runs in 7 innings, but he got the win over Edmonton pitcher Jose Rosado.

* Travis Fryman, one of the best infielders in the game, is helping the Oultaws with his bat, too. He leads the team in RBIs (18) and home runs (6).

* Why do the Outlaws have the best pitching in the McCoy divison? Answer: Paul Spoljaric. The 5th pitcher in the rotation has pitched far beyond expectations. Half of his starts have been quality starts and he is 2-2 with a 3.09 ERA.

* What folly is this? Hartford has only used 10 pitchers all year, and some, like Ramon Martinez and Aaron Sele, could use a break. Hartford has a lot of young pitchers who would like to get the chance to prove themselves.

* A .701 SLG: what more can you say about Alex Rodriguez?
