Mississauga Forced to Look Toward Next Year October 14, 1999
The Mississauga Maple Dogs were hoping to make the playoffs this year.
Not next year, THIS year. "Actually, I'd be very happy to make the post
season next year. But there's something about taking a last place team
to the playoffs in one year. That's what I really wanted." team owner
and GM Jesse Gouldson said.
The Maple Dogs saw some of their future go this season in moves that
were made to help their chances this year. Fortunately they got some
younger players in trades as well. Here's a list of people who have come
and gone since last year through trades (not necessarily in
chronological order).
IN: Reggie Jefferson, Steve Tracshel, Nomar Garciaparra, Marty Cordova,
Edgar Martinez, Brian Rose, Rod Lewis, Draft pick (Troy Glaus), Derrick
Gibson, Roger Pavlik, Dan Plesac, Curt Schilling, Dave Stieb, F.P.
Santangelo, Tom Magner, Felipe Lira
OUT: Bernie Williams, Denny Neagle, Santo Blade, Cliff Magrane, Chris
Holt, Matt Mantei, Bob Autry, Andres Galaragga, Draft pick (Corey
Petterson), Wade Boggs, Lee Sosa, Tony Gwynn, Ariel Prieto
Then there were those who came and went: Mike Metcalfe and Roger Cedeno
"I really think we improved our team. We're a little older and a little
slower but we have incredible hitting, a great rotation and solidified
our bullpen." Gouldson added. "And I'm not done dealing yet. I wanna
make sure that there's no doubt we'll be playing at this time next
year."
