Medina Trades Remaining Stars to Phoenix June 19, 1999
The Mustangs today sold their soul to the Devil, and that Devil is the owner
if the Phoenix Gila Monsters, Pat Bridges.
"He wouldn't let up. "says Mustang owner Randy Reese, "He kept making offer
after offer. Heck, even Commissioner Peck tried to call me while I was in
negotiations, and I just ignored him. My apologies, Commissioner."
The Mustangs gave up two players that are the leagues best at their position.
Off to Phoenix are catcher Ivan Rodriguez and closer Robb Nen.
"This hurt a little. Ivan and Robb are one of the few players left from the
Bellingham Aqua Sox days." sniffed Reese.
In return, the Mustangs received super-prospects, Oort Cloud, Aramis Ramirez,
as well as James Brosius, giving them something they needed, players that can
hit. "Cloud could very well be one of the best leadoff hitters in the game.
Ramirez is projected to be our clean up hitter. Brosius adds some speed,
contact, and good power. In addition, the Mustangs received catcher Miestro
Maxwell, and Phoenix's second round draft pick in next years amateur draft.
"Miestro will fill in for Pudge. We hope next years draft was as deep as this
one." said Reese.
Reese was asked why he traded for two more outfielders, when they already have
Mike Cameron, Roger Cedeno, Don Coker, Jacob Cruz, and draftee Juan Encarncion
all in the system.
"Dont forget we are on a three year plan. The addition of these players
solidifies us in the long run. We have a ton of prospects. We can either trade
some away now, or let them develop, and then trade them away. We have a couple
of drafts between now and then. Sometimes you need to gamble a bit." said
Reese.
Mike Cameron has been slowly upping his stats since the beginning of the
season, and is rumored to be on the trading block.
