Plethora of Pitchers Pound Pepper at Park May 8, 1999
Medina(AP)- Due to recent trades, the Mustangs have found themselves with a
whole bunch of quality pitchers.
"Well, most of them are still young." said Mustangs manager Dick Chudnow. "I
think most of our pitchers have room to develop yet."
Indeed, Mustangs owner and general manager Randy Reese is excited about his
pitchers. "Pete Harnisch, Rick Helling, David Hess, Bob Peterman. Recently we
have traded for Brett Tomko, Chad Ogea, and Ben Hamlin. We have Arthur Rhodes
and Rob Nen in the pen. Knuckleballer Hank Hosley down in the minors. Whew! I
am going to be one excited person over the next 5 years." said Reese.
The hardest part for Chudnow is deciding where to put everyone. "Well, we dont
plan on being in contention this year." said Chudnow, "So we are going to try
our pitchers in different places during the season. Rhodes started in the
lineup at the beginning of the season, now he's in the pen. Washington used
Ogea as a starter and Hamlin has a reliever, we are going to reverse those
roles for awhile and see what happens. I may try Darren Driefort as a closer
for a bit, along with Nen."
Although Reese wont rule out a trade, he isnt actively pursuing a trade
invloving any one of his pitchers. "You know my motto, no one is untouchable,
but I think I would really like to see how our pitchers progress over the next
couple of seasons."
Reese also announced that the Mustangs next home game was Milk Dud Day, with
the first 8,000 fans will receive a carton of Milk Duds.
