Kamloops Signs Alomar To 3 Year Deal November 22, 1999
KAMLOOPS, BC- Roberto Alomar, Deadwood's star secondbaseman has been
signed by the Kamloops Bears, one of the league's worst teams. It was
initially announced that Alomar had only signed a one-year deal but the
terms of the deal were officially disclosed at 3 years and 9 million
dollars. The move was an indication of what may be to come from Kamloops
this off season. GM Paul Glass met the press after announcing the
signing.
"We feel that Alomar has all the tools to be a star in our division, and
he's going to be the cornerstone of a team that is going to make the
playoffs two or three years down the line. When I look at our team, and
all of the kids we have playing winterball now, I see a bunch of future
stars, waiting to explode and wreak havoc on the PVBL."
When asked if Alomar's extensive injury affected his decision Glass
replied: "Our team is a few years away from developping into a
contender. Next season is not going to be our year. Alomar should be
back by the allstar break and he will be in prime form in two seasons
when we look to make a run at the division."
It appears that the Bears motto isn't "wait 'till next year" but rather
"wait for two years." This means that there will not be an overwhelming
number of trades this offseason from Kamloops.
