PVBL: Hartford Whalers
Whalers Deal Millwood, Acquire Kaat

August 31, 1999

The Hartford Whalers and Kamloops pulled of a last-minute trade before the deadline today. It goes as follows:

To Kamloops:
RHP Kevin Millwood Hartford's #1 Ammy pick
Punxatawny's #1 FA pick (acquired in previous deal)
Ann Arbor's #1 FA pick (acquired in previous deal)

To Hartford:
CF Angel Kaat
Kamloop's #2 Ammy pick
Kamloop's #2 FA pick

The Whalers finally appear done dealing and will try to put together a 40-man roster later on this evening. Of the deal, GM Peter Gammons stated, "Millwood is a big, big loss. As was our #1 ammy pick. We already traded our #1 fa pick. But we had to ante up something to land Kaat. It's going to take him 3-5 seasons but Angel has 90-90 potential and we needed another outfielder. Besides, Kamloop's #2 picks should be high in the second round as well. We're looking at one of if not the best future outfield in baseball in Bryne, Abreu and Kaat (and Stynes platooning some). We feel fortunate. We are just banking on our young pitchers developing like they're supposed to while Rocket and Flash hold down the fort."
