Hartford Sets Deadline in Vaughn Sweepstakes August 17, 1999
The Whalers are reportedly asking for two top prospects and a draft pick or
two for Mo -or- one SUPER prospect and a throw-in. When asked about the
rumors, GM Peter Gammons replied, "We've heard from 5 teams or so regarding
Vaughn. He knows we're rebuilding and he's hoping to go to a winner.
We're just looking to get his market value. There are less than ten guys
in the majors with his contact hitting ability and power." Unfortunately
for Vaughn, who just wants to "compete and win," some bottom-feeding teams
have also expressed serious interest in him.
Meanwhile, Hartford has also been approached regarding Roger Clemens,
Masato Yoshi and Ken Hill. Of those offers, Gammons replied, "It is highly
doubtful, barring a tremendous offer, that we'd part with The Rocket. We
have lacked an ace since Brown left and were hoping to have Roger keep us
afloat for the young guys and possibly retire here. Yoshi is our most
marketable pitcher this season given his success. We'll have to see what
happens there. As far as Ken (Hill) goes, he isn't happy here and we're
not happy that he's not happy here. So yes, we've shopped him around. He
just has never found true success in Hartford."
Amidst all the trade rumors Hartford released 7 players, including
long-time Whaler pitcher Mark Brandenburg. Also let go were veterans Billy
Ripken, Al Diaz and Billy Hatcher. All three said they hoped to make
someone's expanded roster heading into the playoffs.
