PVBL: Hartford Whalers
Hill stupendous, Sele Falters

June 19, 1999

Deadwood (AP)- The Hartford Whalers were looking for new hope and rejuvination on their current road trip, a crucial one, to Deadwood and Montreal. What they got was pure frustration and a 4-2 loss. After Ken Hill outdueled Rick Reed, going 8 sollid innings allowing only 2 earned runs while striking out 7, Aaron Sele came on in relief with the score tied in the bottom of the 9th. Sele was unable to keep Hartford's hopes alive. After tying the score at 2 in the top of the 9th, the Whalers and Sele allowed 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning and took their 8th loss in their last 10 games. Hartford dropped 10 1/2 games back of Deadwood in the standings. Hideki Irabu will look to stop the bleeding when he takes the mound tomorrow for Game 2 in Deadwood.

Notes:

-Mark McGwire recorded his first hit, a double, as a member of the Whalers. He went 1 for 3 on the day with an intentional walk.
-Andres Galarraga had both of Hartford's RBI on a solo homerun, his 18th, and a base knock in the 9th.
-Aaron Sele continues to struggle in every role as a Whaler as his ERA ballooned over 6.

Tradewinds:

After satisfying their need for speed by obtaining CF Benard and loading up their minors with SP, the Whalers seem determined to get a hold of some solid pitching, especially a #1 or #2 starter if they can find one.
