PVBL: Hartford Whalers
"Flash" Takes Shutout Loss

June 16, 1999

Hartford, CT (AP)- The Hartford Whalers limped into the Amateur Draft Break by splitting two with Anchorage. After pummeling the Abominations in Game 1, 8-2, Adam Riggs's throwing error cost Hartford Game 2, 1-0. Tom Gordon pitched masterfully in Game 2. Flash went the complete game, allowing only one unearned run. Rookie 2B Adam Riggs' throwing error in the seventh allowed Stan Javier to reach base and later score on Chuck Lyn's base-knock. Gordon was visibly distraught at the conclusion of the game when he threw and kicked a few coolers around in the dugout on his way into the tunnel. Riggs did not meet with reporters. In fact, only interim Manager Dwight Evans met with reporters and simply said, "We're in striking distance and as Yogi said, 'It 'aint over 'till it's over.' I'm disappointed, don't get me wrong. There's no excuse to lose a 1-run game, especially an unearned run. But I think this break will be good for us. We have a lot to work on but no major changes will be made that haven't already been made." Those changes included the recalling of pitchers John Burke and Jack Broskie who combined for a near-perfect 9th inning in Game 1 today.

Tradewinds

Hartford has made it abundantly clear that they are looking to move for an impact offensive player or a high Amateur Draft pick. No one on their roster appears safe. Although Manager Dewey Evans isn't involved in the fray, he has stated, "I cannot be concerned with that. I have to win games with whoever I've got." Hartford's biggest needs appear to be contact hitting and speed, speed, speed!
