Whalers Manager Kevin Kennedy has said that he is sticking with Masato
Yoshi in the rotation despite his going 0-3. "He hasn't gotten the run
support he needs," stated Kennedy, "I mean, I really can't complain about
his 3.48 ERA or demote him for it, can I?"
Staff ace Ken Hill still has yet to return to form, with a mediocre 3-2
record and a sub-par 5.18 ERA. "I'm not sure what's wrong. I feel as
strong as ever," said Hill after today's loss to Montreal.
Hideki Irabu (4-2, 3.11) and Tom Gordon (4-1, 3.09), the #3 and #4
starters, continue to keep the staff afloat.
Sitting on 5 saves and a 0.00 ERA, Troy Percival hasn't had a save
opportunity in almost 2 weeks. "It sucks," commented Troy, "We're 3-7 in
our last ten so I can't even be happy that we're winning. I haven't been
able to do my job. We really need to pull our (expletive) together soon."
Indeed. The Whalers' (17-15) lead in the McCoy Division has dwindled to
just a 1/2 games of the second place Deadwood Outlaws and only 2 games
separate them from the last place Montreal Royals. The McCoy continues to
be the most competetive, exciting and gut-wrenching division in all of the
PVBL to follow or be involved in. McCoy managers surely must buy their
Pepto and Maalox in bulk.
Deadwood was shopping former EL Cy Young winner and All-Star MVP, Greg
Maddux over the weekend but an agreement was never reached with anyone.
Maddux has struggled with both his control and his endurance since
returning from a season-ending torn rotator cuff last year. It is
uncertain whether Maddux will ever return to form. Greg is currently 0-4
with an ERA just under 6 as an Outlaw.
