Galena Holds Record Winning Percentage May 5, 1998
Galena, IL--The Galena Hamsters, after starting out the season slowly at
1-4, have now become the winningest PVBL team so far this season. Their 22
victories are currently leading all PVBL teams. At a record of 22-10, the
Hamsters have a .688 winning percentage, the highest ever for the
franchise at any point in their history.
"I knew when we were 1-4 out of the gate that we had nothing to
worry about," confessed Hamster designated hitter Johnny Butler, "we have
a ton of talent on this team, and barring injury, we should dominate in
1999."
The main reason Galena fell on hard times in the early season was
the success of the Ann Arbor AllKnighters. "We didn't expect to lose to
the AllKnighters," manager/owner/GM Matthew Peck stated, "but when they
beat the pants off of us, we realized they were for real and would contend
with us."
And contend they have, coming in to today's play, the AllKnighters
are 19-11, only 2.0 games behind the mighty Hamsters. Anchorage, a team
that also showed great promise early in the season, has nose dived of
late, and now find themselves 6.5 games back with a record of 14-15, "We
really weren't all that worried about Anchorage," noted ace pitcher Kevin
Appier, "their pitching staff is too weak, especially their starting
rotation. And I don't know why they traded Tomko, since he was exactly
what they need to win."
Out of all the successes the Hamsters have experienced thus far,
there have been dissapointments. RHP Louie Morgan was expected to be the
#5 starter, but struggled with the role. He was eventually optioned to
AAA. Also, 2B Luis Castillo, while playing superb defense in the field,
has been horrid at the plate, hitting only .198 in 27 games. It's rumored
that the Hamsters might listen to offers for a vetern second baseman,
especially since workhorse Bip Roberts is still suffering from a
dehabilitating injury that will keep him out until September.
