(Duluth, MN) And we're not just talking about the weather either. Bjork fan
turnout has dropped to a season low, much due to Duluth's recent unloading
of popular stars for youthful potential, most notably hitting for
pitching. "We never had much more than a .500 ballclub, but at least you
could enjoy watching guys like Rodriguez, Thomas, Belle and Kent play, but
now? We still lose and I don't even know who half the guys are.."
commented an anonymous fan. GM Lund had this to say, "..I understand the
city's complaints, I mean, they've been loyal and patient for the entire
existence of this franchise and all I have to thank them with is asking
them to give us some more time. But I promise you, it'll be worth it."
In all honesty however, Duluth isn't doing all that bad. Sitting
only 4 games back with a 14-15 showing, the Bjork are definately within
striking distance, but can they really contend? ".. if you're asking if
I'm going to throw games to move up in the draft my answer is no. I'd
like to think that we owe the fans a little more than that. I'm dedicated
to making this franchise as competitve as possible, that's why I traded
the guys I did and that's why I refuse to give up during any season."
Andy Lund explained. Surprises so far this year have been starting
pitcher Esteban Loaiza going a perfect 6 wins in 6 games with a 1.51 era.
Closely following Esteban are outfielders Michael Tucker, Hugh Coleman and
DH Derrick Gibson. Tucker and Gibson are enjoying a good year at the
plate hitting .331 and .325 respectively with 13 SB between them. Coleman
is realizing his potential batting a respectable .270+ with 2HR and 7 RBI
in 16 games. Disapointments have been Jeff Hallony (1-5 4.15 era) and
Marc Newfield (.202 avg) at the clean up spot. Rookie new comers Brian
Spiegel, Travis Lee and Mike Caruso have been solid starter. Lee is tied
for the team lead in RBI with Scott Brosius at 14.
