April 8, 1999

Duluth, MN. (Duluth AP) The Bjork came into the new season with high hopes of contention and expectations, yet were greeted with an all too familiar sight. Duluth opening the season with an away series against the Mets going 1-2, even though they outscored the Mets 16-6. In the season opener, Duluth ace Jeff Hallony tossed a beautiful complete game, yielding only one run but got nothing but a 1-0 loss to show for it. "I guess the guys just couldn't get it going today", commented Hallony, "I mean, when you go out and give up only one run, you expect something, but Kerry out did me with the shutout." The Bjork retaliated with a 12-0 shelling in game two, lead much in part by rookie Mike Caruso, this years 9th pick and All-star Alex Rodriguez. "Caruso was a great pick-up", stated Coach Kirby Puckett, "many people criticized GM Lund for drafting yet another SS. I even questioned it due to the teams depth in the slot, but Lund reassured me that Caruso was the best player left in the draft and we'd find a spot for him here in Duluth." Rookies Lee and Caruso are starting an interteam rivalry for rookie of the year with promising #'s after the first series. Mike's hitting +.400 with 5 RBI, while Lee is swinging at a +.300 clip after 3 games. "The season has just started, and we still plan to contend for a trip to the post season", stated Esteban Loaiza shortly after his shutout of the Mets, "we're still confident."
