PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
Anchorage's New Leadoff Man is An Oldy, But a Goody

November 5, 1999

Anchorage AK (AP) - After having its first two choices shot down, Anchorage resorted to its third option and signed former Abomination turned Seadogs Lance Johnson. Lance played almost two full seasons for the Abominations/Bear- cats before being dealt to Washington in a deal involving outfielder Gary Sheffield, who the Abominations then used to obtain third baseman Jeff Cirillo.

Lance was sad to leave the mighty washington franchise, but was glad to be back with his original ballclub. "It was a bitter feeling when they traded me. I wanted to finish my career up there. Now, it looks like I might have a chance to." said Johnson.

Despite rumors that Anchorage was looking to fill a spot left vacant in its bullpen by Don Wengert, general manager "the Man" felt that the team needed a legitimate leadoff man to be a contender. "With Lance, we know what we are getting. We know he'll be happy here and we know that he is the best. We wanted someone who could play, but also someone with good character. Lance is really our guy since day one."

Lance will most likely play in left field for the Abominations, with Cliff Floyd moving to right next season. Brian McRae will remain in center.

Johnson battled through injury last season, but managed to hit an amazing .360 with seven triples, an area that the Boms have been lacking in since his departure. Stan Javier lead the team with two triples last season.

Anchorage's starting lineup will most likely feature Johnson leading off, followed by Mark Grace, Cirillo, John Jaha, and Mike Lieberthal. After that its anyone's guess.

Owner Nick Tulach was enthralled by the fact that he was able to obtain the crafty veteran speedster. "It really hurt to trade Lance the first time, but I gave him my word that I would not do it again. We're gonna ride him into the ground." said Tulach.

Look for the Abominations' to sport a new logo this season.
