PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
No Day Off For Struggling 'Boms

September 17, 1999

Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations were scheduled to have the day off today, but manager Nick Tulach had other ideas. "With the way we've been playing lately, I thought we'd benefit from a day of fundementals training." said Tulach, whose Abominations have lost a season-high seven straight. "My focus this year was to not have a huge slide like this. Now its happened twice."

Pitching has been the culprit the last few games as the Anchorage starters have not had a quality start ion the last four losses. "The games haven't been close. We were playing well for a while, but then I think we lost a little focus. Maybe practice today will help that." said Cliff Floyd, the 'Boms starting left fielder.

The Abominations open a tough three game series at rival ANn Arbor, which could be ugly. "Those guys have owned us all year. They are a tough, tough ballclub. We've gotta be focused to be able to beat them." said Floyd.

The schedule doesn't get any easier after that as the come home to battle the red hot Mississauga MapleDogs. "I have the utmost respect for Mr. Gouldson (MapleDogs owner). We have an outstanding mutual respect for one another. It should be a good series."

With just 15 games left on the schedule this year, Anchorage is hoping to finish 8-7. "If we can pick up eight of these last fifteen, that'll be something positive to take into the off-season evaluation. We've seen some positives this year, VanLandingham, Cirillo, Bobby Jones, Grudzy, they have been a big part of our team. If we continue to improve our young talent, we could maybe meet some of our goals next year." said Tulach.

When asked whether this year was a disappointment, Tulach responded: "Definately. We had a set of goals. Actually they were expectations. And we didn't meet them. Whether it was due to injuries, or personell, or whatever, the bottom line is those expectations were not met. We will evaluate everything again this off-season. We made some mistakes in our evaluation last year, but most of those were corrected during the season. I think we've come up with a good, solid nucleus. Hopefully these ingredients will bake up a good cake."
