Anchorage Plays Last Game at Exxon Field July 12, 1999
Anchorage AK (AP) - The Anchorage Abominations played their last game at
Exxon Field in Anchorage. Amid speculation that the team might move out of
Anchorage and even out of Alaska, Abominations' owner Nick Tulach confirmed
the teams intention to move. "Well, we decided to move. We're moving from
just outside Anchorage to our new stadium downtown." said Tulach.
Amazingly, despite the stadium being built in the heart of the city, no one
seemed to know of its existance. "We saw this big, brick structure being
built, but we just thought it was a new post office or something." said one
citzen, who works just across the street from the new stadium.
The new stadium, which is named Poopmoose Park, is the first completely
publicly funded stadium in the United States. "We snuck the funding for the
stadium through on the backside of an anti-drug legislation." said Tulach.
The money for the stadium comes from a 1/2 percent sales tax increase, which has
been in effect for over a year now. "Wow, really? I never even noticed." said
one citizen. In fact, a poll taken of 500 Anchorage area resident showed that
92% did not even notice the tax increase. "Well, its built now, so there is
no way anyone can about it now." said Tulach.
Interesting enough, the new stadium shares the same interior field dimensions
with old Wrigley Field in Chicago. "We wanted to emulate the most historic
baseball park in all of America, so we built a modern version of Wrigley Field.
Complete with the ivy and everything. Oh, and heated seating of course."
explained Tulach.
Anchorage players are very excited to play in Poopmoose Park. "Its a
beautiful park, and to be associated with the famous Poopmoose, well, there
isn't anything more we could ask for." said Anchorage infielder Jeff Cirillo.
The Abominations will open the second half of the regular season at Poopmoose
Park against the Truro Bears.
Notes:
- Abominations' GM "the Man" has been given player/personnel responsibilities
in light of owner Nick Tulach removal of himself from those operations.
"I feel 'the Man' has a good grasp of what it will take to win here. Of
course, I will still be involved in the decision making process, but he will
be at the fore-front." said Tulach. "the Man" was unavailable for comment.
- Anchorage is said to be shopping both catcher Mike Lieberthal and prospect
Fernando Tatis around the league. Rumor has it that they are willing to
package both players, and possibly a draft pick, for an ace quality starter.
