Abominations Earn Split Against Border Patrol June 26, 1999
Tucson (AP) - Just one day after what seemed to be a total unravelling of the
Anchorage franchise, the Abominations put together a magical comeback that was
like out of a story book. Down 6-1 going into the ninth inning, Anchorage
was almost assured a loss after the previous game's debocle. But the seemingly
cursd franchise pulled the wool over Tucson pitcher Chuck Bonner's eyes.
Slugging their way back into the game, Bonner gave up five runs without getting
an out in the inning. John Jaha and Greg Vaughn both homered in the inning
as Anchorage rallied to score seven and take a 8-6 lead which would be preserved
by reliever Mike Holtz in the bottom of the frame.
Anchorage players mobbed the field after Holtz recorded the final out, as
if they had won the Wolrd Series. "It was unbelievable. To one minute be
down by five runs against a guy like Pettitte and then to have the lead,
this is why I play the game." said Brian McRae, who decided to give back his
paycheck for the last game.
Anchorage pitcher Buddy Moisan struggled in his second start of the year.
He was pulled after just 3 1/3 innings after giving up 4 runs. "He's having
some problems with mechanics out there. Its something that we need to correct.
Its a trial by fire, but we don't really have a choice." said manager Nick
Tulach.
Anchorage Stuns Ann Arbor, "Cookies To Blame"
Ann Arbor (AP) - General manager "the Man" may have made the greatest move
of his short career with the Abominations. "I got the package for Mr. Tulach
late yesterday from Mississauga owner Jesse Gouldson and decided that I had
better get it to him right away." said "the Man". He then jumped on the next
flight in and made it to Ann Arbor just in time for the game.
"Those cookies really are magical. Mmmm. And are they good too!" said
manager Nick Tulach. Tulach was able to divvy up the succulant morsels to
all him players, except Rickey Henderson. "I'm allergic to maple." said
Henderson, who was the only starting 'Bom without a hit.
Anchorage starter Mike Bottenfield returned to form and pitched a solid
6 1/3 innings before giving way to Terry Werden, who held the lead at 6-3
until Eddie Guardado came in to get the save.
The Maple Dog cookies, which have been marketed mainly for the
Mississauga/Toronto area, have a sweet, maple-like flavor, with just a hint of
cinnamon.
Notes:
- Billy Wagner, the 'Boms best pitcher, made the trip to Ann Arbor to see his
club play for the first time since going down on May 18th. Anchorage trainer
Mark Fiele decided to take the opportunity to try an unorthodox procedure on
Wagner. "Well I figured it was worth a shot, so I rubbed one of the cookies
on Billy's injured shoulder, and amazingly he said it felt much better. In
fact, we have activated him off the DL and he may be ready to pitch in
tomorrow's game!" said Fiele. "I'd say it was a miracle, but it wasn't. Those
cookies are just magical!" commented Wagner, during a throw around prior to
the game. In fact, Wagner's velocity seems to be up by 2-3 mph on his fastball.
"I just hope we can get a hold of some more of those cookies."
