PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
Abominations' Inconsistent Play Continues

June 24, 1999

Tucson (AP) - The Abominations have been living up to their name on the playing field lately. Struggling after a heart-breaking series against the Ann Arbor AllKnighters, the 'Boms tried to come into Tucson and gain some momentum before going back into the division again. That was not to happen, thanks to the bats of the Tucson Border Patrol.

After getting pounded in the first game of the three game set, Anchorage bounced back behind the lone bright spot in a quickly fading season, Willie VanLandingham. Game two showed just how good the Abominations could be, if only they could play on a consistent basis. Stellar defense, good pitching and key hitting led to a 4-3 victory.

As good as Anchorage played in game 2, they played that bad in game 3 of the series. In what turned out to be the second route of the series, Anchorage pitching got blasted by the bats of Tucson. MVP Bob Higginson led the way with three hits, including two home runs, and six RBIs. "I've always hit Lira well. Eshelman came in and just didn't seem comfortable out there either and he gave me some good pitches to hit too. We owned these guys tonight." said Higginson.

Anchorage manager Nick Tulach was devastated by the defeat, which he called "a disgrace to baseball". "I'm not doing my job, [Lira's] not doing his job, no one is doing a consistent job here." said Tulach. When asked what will be done and if the changes involve Tulach stepping down from manager and giving more decision making power to GM "the Man", he replied "most definately, all of the above."

Anchorage players were also very embarassed by their performance. "I really don't feel any of us earned our paycheck tonight. In fact, I'm giving it back. No way in [explitive] am I getting paid for that [explitive]." said outfielder Brian McRae. Felipe Lira was noticably upset and unwilling to interview after the game. Vaughn Eshelman, who gave up 12 hits and 10 earned runs in just three innings of work said that he "was going home to pack for New Iberia [the Abominations farm team] tonight."

The Abominations' schedule only gets worse, with a trip to Ann Arbor after game four of the Tucson series and then its back home to take on division- leading Galena.
