Anchorage Unloads Expendable Players June 16, 1999
Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations, instead of using the week off to relax,
used the lapse in schedule due to the upcoming amateur draft to unload a
number of players that the franchise deemed "expendable". In a series of
unrelated deals, Anchorage sent outfielders F.P. Santangelo and Garret Anderson,
as well as lefty Scott Karl to various teams.
Scott Karl was sent to the Medina Mustangs in exchange for the 22nd pick in
the up coming amateur draft. Karl was well liked by managment as well as the
fans, but became expendable after teh acquistion of lefty Scott Aldred. "We
didn't want to over load our rotation with left handed pitching, particularly
witht he way right handed hitters have been hitting us. We need to improve
against them. Also we didn't like have two guys named Scott in the starting
rotation." said manager/owner Nick Tulach.
The much maligned F.P. Santangelo was dealt to Thunder Bay, where he will
assume multiple roles as player/manager. Anchorage acquired veteran right
fielder Tony Gwynn and a 2nd round free agent draft pick from Thunder Bay
in exchange for the centerfielder. "F.P. has been a distraction off the field
this year and with the Brian [McRae], we have a everyday center fielder who
is a leadoff hitter. F.P. was the odd man out." said Tulach.
Finally, in another deal that sent sparks flying around the league,
Anchorage dealt budding star outfielder Garret Anderson to the league's best
team, the Washington Seadogs, for highly touted pitching prospect Buddy Moisan.
"I think we have our future #1 starter now. Buddy is going to be a very solid
pitcher. Garret was a tough player to give up, but we still have Vaughny back
there. It was decided that Greg is going to be the man." said Tulach.
Vaughn had been thesubject of numerous trade rumors, but all possiblities
fizzled this morning. "We were negotiating with several teams about Vaughn.
It turned out that we took a second look and decided to keep him and move
Anderson in order to get what we felt we needed. Plus we were able to hang on
to our three draft picks, which we feel will yield us three quality prospects."
said Tulach.
Anchorage holds the 22nd, 26th, and 39th picks in the upcoming amateur draft
as well as two 3rd round picks.
