Anchorage Graced With New First Baseman June 16, 1999
Juneau AK (AP) - The Abominations continued their wheeling and dealing
yesterday by acquiring veteran first baseman Mark Grace from the New Diggens
Budweiser Frogs. Anchorage sent veterans Luis Alicea and Mickey Tettleton
to New Diggens in the deal and also acquired the 39th pick in the upcoming
free agent draft. Anchorage owner Nick Tulach has been in pursuit of Grace
for some time. "I like his style of play. He's solid on defense, and good
hitter and great in the clubhouse. A real leader for this ballclub, just what
we've needed." said Tulach.
Grace has struggled for the Frogs. He is hitting just .236 this season and
was recently on the disabled list. "I'm glad to be back, healthy, and ready
to play everyday. Playing in Anchorage will be a fresh start for me." said
Grace at a press conference in Juneau. Grace is expected to be the full time
first baseman for Anchorage, with Jaha moving to DH.
The addition of Grace has opened up the Abominations to begin trade talks
with regards to Greg Vaughn, the veteran left fielder who was a former home
run champion. Vaughn is scheduled to come off the disabled list this week.
Also Anchorage has been shopping around centerfielder F.P. Santangelo since
their deal to acquire center fielder Brian McRae went through.
