Anchorage Deals Alou, Telgheder, Prospect June 13, 1999
Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations once again made another roster move to
help solidify their offense, possibly at the expense of their bullpen. The
'Boms dealt three players for veteran centerfielder Brian McRae. The cost,
seemingly steep, was justified by owner Nick Tulach. "Dave [Telgheder] asked
to be traded, and frankly he had little market value after his terrible outings
this season. Donahue was a good prospect, but Garret [Anderson] is our future
in leftfield. Alou was only a short term solution for right field and has
really struggled this year. McRae brings us a no-brainer leadoff man, which was
something we were missing. Miguel [Cairo] and Grudz [Grudzielanek] were good
enough to be leadoff, but McRae is a solid leadoff man." said Tulach.
It is unknown what will become of veterans F.P. Santangelo and Stan Javier.
Santangelo has more market value and Javier is a rare utility player, so it
seems logical for Anchorage to try to deal Santangelo. "We do have a log jam
at centerfield now. We will see what we can do to remedy the situation. We
still aren't done rebuilding this franchise. I've had a vision since day one
of purchasing the club from Cincinnati. That vision is now closer to reality."
said Tulach.
Anchorage's lineup now looks a bit different, once the injured players return.
The infield is catcher Mike Lieberthal, first baseman John Jaha from Tampa Bay,
second baseman Miguel Cairo, the teams's franchise player, third baseman
Jeff Cirillo, the only real potential superstar in the lineup, and shortstop
Mark Grudzielanek. The outfield, which is still somewhat shaky, consists of
right fielder Willie McGee, centerfielder Brian McRae from Houston, and
left fielder Greg Vaughn. Garrett Anderson and Rickey Henderson will platoon
in the lineup at DH.
Notes:
- Looting and rioting continue as the search for the missing mascot's feet
sputters. Many businesses have been completely destroyed and the
Abominations have been forced to move operations temporarily to Juneau
until the National Guard is able to restore order in the city. The 'Boms
will play home games at East Juneau High School Stadium, which has a capacity
of 7,800. Four more people have died, three of which were National Guardsmen
bringing the death toll to 34.
